In an age where dating seems a little overrated, Swathy Sethumadhavan writes about four dysfunctional couples that make us feel good about our relationships.
1. Sid and Nancy
One of the few rock ‘n’ roll couples to have achieved cult status, Sid Vicious, the bassist of The Sex Pistols met Nancy Spungen, a groupie while she was trying to bed the lead singer, Johnny Rotten. Failing to do so, she found herself in the arms of Vicious and thus began their 23-month long courtship. Both of them became heavy addicts of heroin and when The Sex Pistols broke up, Nancy decided to go into rehab. She decided to help Sid’s solo career also but heroin always found a way back into their lives. However, after a series of Sid’s failed gigs, Nancy was found dead on October 12th from a single-stab wound in her abdomen. Sid was charged with murder and he died from a heroin overdose after being released from prison. A note was later found which read, “We had a death pact and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye.”
2. Adolf and Eva
Despite being a big public figure, little is known about the Fuhrer’s private life and lesser is known about his mistress-turned-wife (mind you, only for 40 hours!). Eva Braun’s loyalty to Hitler spanned over 14 years and she was always well informed about the activities her beloved ‘wulf’ was doing. After the failure of Operation Barbarossa, Eva drove to Berlin from Munich to be with Hitler at his hideout where they were married in a brief civil ceremony. A loud gunshot was soon heard from their bunker and when a valet checked, he found lifeless bodies on a small sofa. Hitler had shot himself and Braun had bitten into a cyanide capsule to avoid humiliation at the hands of the approaching Russians. Braun’s commitment to Hitler seems irrational but as Blaise Pascal says, “The heart has its reasons that reason knows nothing of.”
3. Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan
Two of Indian cinema’s pioneers, The Angry Young Man, Amitabh, met the sultry Bhanurekha while working for their film, Do Anjaane. With a sizzling on-screen chemistry, directors flocked to cast this pair in their movies. Soon, rumours began to spread of this romance continuing off-screen as Amitabh spent most of his time at Rekha’s house. Wife Jaya Bachchan publicly announced that she would stick by her husband till his conscience got the better of him. More sparks flew when the three were cast in Yash Chopra’s Silsila and reel and real almost clashed. However, this ‘awesome threesome’ dissolved when wifey Jaya became Sr. Bachchan’s ‘knight’ during the trying time of his injury. Thus, she whisked him away from the Southern belle.
Two’s company. Three’s definitely a crowd.
4. Kurt and Courtney
Never has grunge looked so good. Nirvana lead singer, Kurt Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love were considered the power couple of the rising grunge movement. They shared a love of cocaine and other drugs and were married in 1992 after Courtney was pregnant. She wore a satin dress and he wore green pajamas because he was too lazy to put on a tux (men, I tell you!). Their daughter was named Frances. In April 1994, he was found dead with a gunshot wound on his head and a suicide note that spoke about how his love for music had withered away and how ‘his goddess of a wife’ should stay strong for their daughter.
