So, You Understand?

Rajiv

He glanced at his watch. He had been holding his mobile phone for close to an hour now but had still not typed anything. He had been meaning to do this for quite a while but every time he thought of writing to her, his fingers froze. He thought if it was because he still loved her but rejected the possibility almost instantly. She had joined a college outside the city almost two years ago. It had been fine initially but then life had gradually taken its toll on their relationship. Their friends believed that long-distance relationships never worked but they’d felt that what they shared was different. What was it that went wrong then?  He had asked this question to himself a million times but had never found an answer. Was it just the sheer distance or was it something else? He shuddered at the thought of Rhea, the girl in his class who he couldn’t take his eyes off. He wasn’t supposed to feel this way. He could never cheat on Naina in spite of all their differences.

His fingers ran over the keypad. He started typing slowly only to keep clearing the message again and again. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t hurt her. She did text him each day after all. She must still love him. At least that’s what the texts said. She ended with a “Love you much!” each time.

Frustrated, he messaged her. “Hi”, the text read.

If only she understood, he thought.

Naina

She pulled herself away from his grip. He was sound asleep now. She got out of bed and put on her clothes. Her phone was blinking. ”Hi”, read the message. It was from Rajiv. .Her fingers ran over the keypad gingerly. She looked at the bed, not knowing what she felt. Was she guilty for letting Rajiv down? She knew he loved her but she didn’t feel the same anymore. She couldn’t help this feeling. Does cheating even count when you’re not in love?

If only he understood, she thought.

She went to the kitchen to make some coffee. She flipped her cell phone open and started typing a message.

Rajiv received a message. It was from Naina.

“Hi! I am a little busy right now. Will call you later. Love you much!”

If only they could understand…

true much,i should say.if only the two of them actually shared what was truly going on in their heads!i guess there lies the key to every successful long distance relationship- communicating on regular basis and talking about what you are actually feeling.
