Dylan goes electric…
Once upon a time, our man Bob wrote songs which would become the voice of many generations to come. Mr.Dylan was labelled as the voice of the generation thanks to his folk sound and his politically-charged lyrics. He sort of made American Folk music “hip” again (Ah! the good old sixties’) and with expert timing Mr.Dylan released Bringing It All Back Home, the rock-sound and the electric instruments pissed a lot of people; especially in the folk music community.
Dylan nailed the coffin when he played a rock set at the Newport Folk Music Festival on 25th July, 1965. Until then people were used to seeing Dylan with his trademark acoustic guitar and harmonica. When he decided he wanted a more amplified sound – a lot of these people booed him and Dylan being the volatile man he is, walked off. He later returned when the organisers pleaded with him, performing a three song acoustic guitar and harmonica set.
What people didn’t know was that Dylan wouldn’t return to the Newport Folk Festival for 37 years and it was only in 2002 that he performed there again.
Was he actually booed because he went electric? Well, some old folks didn’t like rock music then like how some folks don’t like rock music now and hence, wanted to listen to distortion-free ‘poetry’. However, a lot of people say that the booing was because of the duration of the set Mr.Dylan was allowed.
The truth? We’ll never know.
