Symmetry in Nature
Symmetry and patterns – two immensely important characteristics that nature can be defined by. Mirrors and reflections create a symmetry that not only looks artistic but can also create interesting shapes in the world around us.
The thought first struck me when I was appreciating the beauty of a marigold. The near-perfect symmetry intrigued me a lot. That is when the thought was born. There must be symmetry in all that we see around us; in everything that surrounds us.
The beauty of a flower, the majesty of a tree, even the rocks upon which we walk can exhibit nature’s sense of symmetry. Everything that surrounds us is enveloped in a very uncanny sense of symmetry. The underlying symmetry within the petals of a flower is something that I find extremely interesting and beautiful. It is nature’s own form of poetry.
I am perpetually intrigued by these two attributes. Thus, I let photography take over and guide my vision and lead me into the world of these gorgeous illusions. Thus, I found myself clicking the smallest of the flowers by the side of the road, the weirdest of trees that I could spot – only to mirror them and find that symmetry. Some of the results were extremely fascinating, others were promising nonetheless.
Through this series, what I tried was to foresee this beauty, this mystery. I tried to see whether I could find this symmetry in everything around me. This entire journey has been quite enlightening. It was immensely exciting to see the mirror images form in front of my eyes – each time a different unique pattern.
The best thing about an assignment like this is the idea itself. Mirroring photographs and creating illusions can be done with a number of subjects. The possibilities are endless and limited to only our imagination!
